What factors can affect the cost to hang a door?

There are a number of extra things that could affect the price of your hanging door project.

Hinges and door handles

Fixtures and fittings like hinges and door handles will generally be included in the price when you purchase the door, so you won’t pay any more to have them installed. However, if you need custom door handles or hinges, this may cost you a little extra.

Painting or staining

Often, new doors will come as unpainted or unstained wood – you may want to have a painter and decorator paint or stain them, both for the aesthetics but also to ensure the door lasts as long as possible. This will generally cost another £40-£80 per door.

Adjusting or trimming the door

Sometimes, the door itself doesn’t fit properly in the doorway. This can lead to annoying issues like the bottom of the door scraping on the carpet or floor, or the door not closing properly or sitting flush within the frame. Of course, you want to avoid this – so a professional carpenter will be able to trim the door at the top, bottom or sides to ensure they fit perfectly. This will cost a little extra per door, usually around £20.

Types of internal doors

There are multiple types of internal door that you can have in your home – in this guide so far we’ve been assuming that you’re installing traditional swinging doors, as these are by far the most common.

However, there are some other options you could look into, although these will generally be a lot more expensive, and only possible in specific rooms with the right architectural features, so do get the opinion of the professional carpenter on which is right for you.

Swinging doors

As we’ve just mentioned, these are the traditional doors on 2 or 3 hinges. Generally, they open one way, and usually into a room, but some can be on special hinges that allow them to open both ways.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors are great if you’ve got small rooms, as they don’t open into the room and take up space. However, you do need the wall space to the side of the doorway for the door to roll into. They’re also challenging to install – the price will vary massively depending on the size and type of sliding door, but you should expect to pay at least £200 per door, just for installation.

Folding doors

Another commonly installed type of door is the folding door, sometimes known as bifold doors. These are usually installed as patio doors, but you can get wooden bifold doors to be used internally.

Again, these are significantly more expensive to install, with prices starting at £300+ for installation – and the doors themselves can be very expensive, as they're fitted with carefully designed folding hinges.

Internal door materials

On top of the variety of different types of doors that are on offer, you can also choose from a range of different door materials. While these won’t generally affect the installation price, each material has different properties and will vary in cost to purchase. We’ve outlined a few details on the most common materials below.

Hardwood

Hardwood doors are generally the premium option, with the price tag to match. Solid hardwood oak doors are quite expensive, but they are very durable and will last a long time. Many people chose hardwood doors because of their aesthetics. Expect to pay at least £200 per door for a hardwood door. 

Softwood

Softwood doors are cheaper than hardwood, but still have the beautiful appeal of natural wood. They’re often made from pine, and start from around £80 per door. Softwood doors are fairly durable and resilient, although not to the same extent as hardwood doors.

MDF

MDF doors, sometimes called engineered wood, are usually made from a real wood veneer and then the internal part is manufactured from man-made MDF wood. These are more affordable than hardwood doors and start from around £100.

Metal

Metal doors are very resilient and durable, although not as commonly chosen as wooden alternatives. They can be very affordable, and the aesthetics will suit a lot of very modern home interiors, making them a popular choice in homes of this style. Metal doors can vary significantly in price, but many can be quite affordable, starting from around £60.

uPVC

uPVC internal doors are a popular choice as they’re made from recycled materials and are very durable. In addition, uPVC can be stained or painted to look like any other finish you desire, giving you high-end aesthetics without the high-end price. uPVC doors start from around £50 each.
