Power showers are designed to use both hot and cold water from your water supply to get to the temperature set by the shower's thermostat. They are ideal for homes with low water pressure as they come with a pump to improve the flow rate. They cost an average of £650 to supply and install, but what factors make up this cost?

How much does it cost to install a power shower?

On average, it costs £650 to install a power shower, but this will vary depending on whether you are replacing an existing power shower, the brand of shower you choose and where you are in the country.

Power shower brands

There are lots of power shower brands on the market, along with plenty of generic power showers that may be suitable for your needs. However, sometimes it can pay to spend a bit more on a well-known brand – while the initial cost may be higher, it may save you money in maintenance and repair costs in the long term.

Factors affecting the cost of power shower installation

While the average cost of installing a power shower is around £650, several factors can influence the final price you pay. Being aware of these can help you budget more accurately and avoid unexpected expenses:

  • New installation vs replacement: If you're replacing an existing power shower and the pipework and electrics are already in place, the job is much quicker and cheaper. A brand new installation, on the other hand, may involve extra plumbing or electrical work, which increases the time and cost.
  • Type and brand of shower: Well-known power shower brands like Aqualisa, Mira or Triton may cost more upfront, but they’re often more reliable and easier to maintain, which can save money in the long run. Some models also come with more advanced thermostats or multiple spray settings, which can add to the price.
  • Condition of existing pipework and electrics: If your home’s pipework or electrical system needs upgrading to meet current regulations, this will add to the cost. For example, an electrician may need to replace older fuse boxes to safely connect the new shower, particularly if it draws a high current.
  • Location in your home: If your bathroom is far from your water tanks or electricity supply, more materials and labour could be required. For example, installing a power shower in an upstairs en-suite that's a long way from the airing cupboard may involve running new pipework or extending circuits.
  • Any additional work required: You might also need extra work like tiling, sealing, or repairing walls and flooring after installation. While these tasks are relatively minor, they can still add to your overall bill if not included in your quote.
  • Where you live: Labour costs vary depending on where you live. In general, tradespeople in London and the south east charge more than those in the north of England or Wales.

How do power showers work?

Power showers work by combining hot and cold water from your supply in the same way that a normal mixer shower would, but they have an electric pump inside that boosts your flow rate and water pressure, producing a much more luxurious shower experience.

If you have a conventional boiler with a cold water tank in your loft that supplies water to a hot water tank (usually kept in an airing cupboard), then you can have and may benefit from a power shower.

Conventional boiler systems are low-pressure systems, which can result in a shower that feels more like a dribble than a waterfall, so a power shower can help combat this.

How long does it take to install a power shower?

If you’re replacing a power shower with another one, you can usually expect it to be installed within 3 hours, provided the fixtures and fittings are generally the same.

If you’re installing a power shower for the first time, it’s more likely to take a whole day to install.

It could take up to two days if you need extra pipework, but this is generally only if you want the shower to be in a different place from your old one.

How long do power showers last?

A well-maintained power shower typically lasts between 4 and 8 years, although this can vary depending on how often it’s used, the water quality in your area and the make and model.

Hard water areas can shorten a shower’s lifespan due to limescale build-up, especially in the pump. Installing a water softener or regularly descaling your system can help extend its life. High-quality brands like Mira and Aqualisa may cost more upfront, but they often last longer and come with better warranties and support.

Regular servicing, such as checking for leaks, ensuring the filters are clean and monitoring pump performance, can help you get the most from your investment.

Do power showers work with combi boilers?

No, power showers don’t work with combi boilers. Power showers use your hot and cold water supply alongside a pump to provide a high-pressure shower, so they need a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder to function.

Combi boilers provide better pressure, so it is unlikely that you would need a power shower anyway. You can install a thermostatic mixer shower, which uses hot and cold water to provide the correct temperature in a similar way to a power shower, but doesn’t require a pump.

What is the difference between a power shower and an electric shower?

Lots of people mistakenly think that power showers and electric showers are the same. While both use electricity, they are very different.

Electric showers only use cold water and then heat it to the required temperature, so these showers can be used with any boiler or plumbing system. They also don’t contain a pump as they’re connected to the mains, so usually don’t need any extra pressure.

Do power showers use a lot of electricity?

Power showers do use more electricity than a standard mixer shower, as they include a built-in pump to boost water pressure. However, they don’t heat the water – that’s done by your boiler – so their energy use is mainly limited to the pump motor.

Typically, a power shower pump uses between 200-500 watts, depending on the model. To put that into context, that’s less than a kettle or a hairdryer, and since most people only shower for 5–10 minutes at a time, the overall electricity usage is relatively low.

If you shower daily, you might see a small increase in your energy bill, but most homeowners find this a worthwhile trade-off for better shower performance.

If you’re very concerned about your electricity usage, you could choose a low-wattage model or an eco power shower to help you strike a balance between comfort and consumption.

Do you need an electrician to install a power shower?

Generally, you do need an electrician or a plumber who is Part P-certified to install a power shower. According to Building Control regulations, any alterations to a bathroom or wet room is notifiable work under Part P, so it’s important to get the work done correctly. Power showers involve both water and electrical connections, which makes them higher risk than other types of bathroom work.

If you try to install a power shower yourself and you don’t know what you’re doing, you could pose a fire risk or shock yourself, so it’s not worth the risk to save money on labour costs.

Are power showers worth it?

If you have a low-pressure water system and you’re suffering from dribbling showers, we definitely think power showers are worth it. If it’s important to you, having a shower that provides decent pressure can improve your quality of life, so weigh up the costs and benefits and make a decision for yourself.

It’s always best to get at least 3 quotes from local plumbers to ensure you’re getting the best price for your power shower installation. Post your job on HaMuch now and we’ll put you in touch with available plumbers in your area.
