Cost to fit blinds

If you're considering installing blinds in your home, you're probably wondering how much they will cost to fit. While it's possible to fit blinds yourself, it can be tricky, and you might not get the finish you want, especially if you need to make cuts.

So how much does it cost to fit blinds using a professional? We'll explain in this guide.

How much do blinds cost to be fitted?

It will cost between £20-£30 per hour to have a professional fit your blinds. How long it will take to fit your blinds will depend on the type of blinds you choose and how many sets of blinds you want to have fitted.

This hourly cost is an average based on the entire UK. You may pay less or more depending on where you live. If you live in London or the south east, expect to pay more than this average, while if you're in the north of England or in Scotland or Wales you may pay less.

Take a look at the table further down the page for our estimated rates for blinds installers in different areas of the UK. We have a huge database of hourly and daily rates for carpenters and blinds professionals and use them to break down costs based on location.

Hardwood blinds installation

Hardwood blinds are a great option for many homes. They look fabulous in many types of property and are good at blocking out light, so are good for bedrooms. Expect to pay between £40-£120 for an average-sized wooden blind.

You can also buy faux wood blinds which are more budget friendly; these cost around £25-£50 each.

Roller blinds installation

Roller blinds are an ideal choice if you want your blinds to be tucked into the window. They're called roller blinds because they have a piece of fabric that rolls down to cover the window. They can be installed within the recess of your window or on the outside.

This type of blind comes in lots of different colours and patterns, so they fit in lots of rooms. You can also buy moisture-resistant roller blinds, making them a great option for kitchens or bathrooms.

Expect to pay between £10-£50 for an average roller blind.

Venetian blinds installation

Venetian blinds have been a popular choice for many years because they're so aesthetically pleasing. They are made up of horizontal slats that you can adjust to let in different amounts of light. You can usually buy them in a wood finish, aluminium and PVC, so are suitable for many different rooms.

Venetian blinds are ideal for allowing in light but still offering you privacy. They're a good budget option as an alternative to shutters.

Generally, Venetian blinds will cost between £30-£80 each.

Vertical blinds installation

Vertical blinds are ideal for large windows or French doors. They are usually made from strips of fabric that hang vertically from the window or door frame.

Again, vertical blinds are great for allowing you to control the amount of light that enters your room, but they're no longer as popular as Venetian or roller blinds.

An average vertical blind will cost between £15-£35.

How much do blinds cost from Hillarys?

Hillarys are a popular brand of made-to-measure blinds. They have been in the market for years, so offer good-quality blinds that should last a long time.

As you'd expect, Hillarys blinds will cost you more than blinds that you pick up ready made from a home or DIY store.

Their blinds start at £50 for a small roller blind, verticals from £55 and Roman blinds from £93. These are their value range prices, so expect to pay more if you want a better finish. Their faux wood blinds start from around £84, while their hardwood and bamboo range will cost more.

Are window blinds cheaper than curtains?

The answer to whether window blinds are cheaper than curtains is: it depends! You could pick up a budget ready-made blind for the same price as a pair of budget curtains. On the other hand, high-quality made-to-measure blinds will cost much more.

But there are also luxury, designer curtains that could cost far more than window blinds. It all depends on the look you're going for.

Do blinds increase home value?

Like any home furnishing, blinds can increase your home's value if they give a good finish and seem well looked-after. Beautiful blinds that really complement the rest of a room's decor will add value, while dirty, broken or badly-fitted blinds may put buyers off and therefore lower the value of your home.

That's why it's important to get a professional to install your blinds for you. Whether you get made-to-measure blinds or ask a professional to install ready-made blinds that you've bought yourself, you'll get a much better finish.

What is the law on blinds in the UK?

In 2014, new regulations for blinds were established in the UK after a series of blinds-related fatalities in children. These are referred to as BS EN 13120, and they apply to every set of blinds sold in the UK, regardless of whether they're installed in a home with children or not.

According to these British Standard regulations, blinds must have no accessible cords. This means that some blinds must be installed with child safety devices and all pull cords must have 150cm distance between the bottom of the cord and the floor. If you have a breakaway device on your blinds, this is reduced to 60cm.

A breakaway device is a safety device that splits the chain from the rail if more than 6kg of weight is applied. This ensures that the cord will fall to the floor if a child gets tangled up in the cord.

Your blinds installer must adhere to these regulations. When you get quotes from carpenters and blinds fitters, make sure you check that they're aware of BS EN 13120.
