Toilet emergencies
Toilets become blocked when people try to flush inappropriate items (eg nappies, sanitary towels or excessive amounts of paper). Wire coat hangers or plungers can often clear such blockages before calling a plumber.
Toilets often leak between the toilet and the waste pipe due to flor or fixing bolt movement causing pipe joints to move and leak. Toilets usually require fixing securely to floor and pipe joints tightened to stop the leak unless the floor itself is moving in which case will need securing also. Toilets can also leak from the cistern which sits on the bowl if there is a problem with the fixings and gasket.
Toilets can flush water continuously if the flushing float mechanism or ballcock becomes damaged or stuck. New parts are required and probably the services of a plumber.
Turning of the water supply with a leaking toilet
If you can turn off the water supply to the toilet you can limit damage. There will be a water supply to the toilet regardless of the style and there should be a valve which if you turn ¼ anticlockwise normally stops the water entering a toilet cistern. You may need to lift the cistern lid, look under or behind toilet at pipes feeding water to toilet or if its wall mounted remove the flushing plate on the wall. If you cannot isolate water supply specifically to the toilet then you can turn off the mains stock-cock to your property and this will stop the water but also turn off all other water in your home.
Water or gas pipe leak or burst
Pipes can burst or leak due to various reasons:
Structural movement
Pipes fixed in the ground, in walls or to structural timbers could fracture or cause failure of pipe joints resulting in leaks if there is movement of a property or its foundations.
Mechanical damage
Nails hammered into walls can find and pierce copper and plastic pipes easily. When moving heavy hard edged appliances such as fridges, washing machines can accidentally cause damage to pipes when pushed over or onto them, I personally had a copper gas pipe leak where the pipe came up through tiles behind a fridge.
Freezing
During cold weather pipes outside and in can freeze which causes pipes to split due to ice expanding more than water. A frozen slip pipe in a loft can cause severe damage over the pipe thaws and a non stop flow of water pools onto ceilings.
Corrosion and erosion
Condensing boilers can produce acidic condensation which if leaks can drip onto copper pipes and dissolve them. Central heating radiators can corrode (ie rust) and copper pipes erode internally as debris circulates scratching the inside of pipes over years until pin holes start to appear, not many people know this and they just get crazy leaks especially near ceiling spot lights because the magnets attract iron debris to run along wall of pipe increasing erosion.
Water leaks and pipework in you home
If you smell gas open the windows and doors and turn the gas off if you know how. The tap will probably be near the meter then move outside and call your gas supplier or a gas safe engineer.
Water leaks are less dangerous (normally) but can cause lots of damage. First thing to do is find your mains water stop cock and turn it off so no more water leaks. Call a local plumber to investigate.
Mains water leaks
Between water supply point (usually at pavement) and stopcock. If the mains water is leaking underground over time the water will cause subsidence if under your property (happening to front of my house right now!). You will need to turn off supply at pavement to stop leak and then did a trench along pipe to find leak and probably replace old pipe (maybe lead). You will probably need to get your water authority involved which can be a hassle but if an emergency (ie you don’t have water) then they usually get to you quickly.
Leak from a pipe or appliance in home i.e. after your stopcock. Pipes can leak due to an historic bad connection which finally fails or mechanical damage either way turn off stock cock and call a plumber. Appliances leak for same reasons and same solution ie find and turn off stopcock and call a plumber to fix your dripping tap, overflowing toilet, leak coming through ceiling etc.
Heating system leaks
Heating systems are most often caused by radiators or fittings corroding internally and then the dirty black/brown sludgy water dripping from pin holed radiators or a corroded fitting (pump or valve). A radiator leak can be stopped by turning off BOTH valves on the radiator, if there are not valves at either side (which both work) then you cannot isolate the radiator to stop the leak. Either way put a tray under the leak. The cause of the leak is corrosion in the WHOLE system ie ALL the radiators. While changing the one leaking radiator will fix the immediate problem you will continue to get more leaks from other points in the system unless you get your WHOLE heating system properly cleaned i.e. powerflushed.
