How much is Ford Mondeo insurance?

The last Ford Mondeo came off the production line in 2022 after nearly 30 years of commercial success. The car was introduced as a global Ford car back in 1993 with variants around the world using the same chassis.

There are currently over 200,000 Ford Mondeos on UK roads. Cheap spare parts and competitive garage servicing means that the Mondeo can be relatively economical to run but insurance premiums are higher than similar smaller Ford cars.

The Ford Mondeo insurance grouping is determined in the UK by The ABI and ranges from between 12 and 27. The engine size and power rating determines the cars grouping as well as how cheaply it can be repaired.

Buying a used Ford Mondeo

The Mondeo hatchback or estate car is a good family car with plenty of room and large boot space. The car is not as popular as the more fashionable SUV style vehicles, so you can pick up a bargain Mondeo on the used car market.

There are various powertrain options available including the award winning Ecoboost 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine and the various sizes and versions of the turbo diesel. If you live in London make sure you buy a Euro 6 version which is also cleaner and cheaper to tax.

For the above quote we used a 2016 1.5 TDCI with 114BHP but if you want more power there are larger diesel and petrol engines to suit, but they will be in a higher insurance group which means a more expensive insurance premium.

In the used market the fourth generation (2012 onwards) model appears to be popular with motorists looking for a family car that's relatively cheap to run and looks good. The sleeker low profile styling and responsive handling make it an attractive used car option, with the Ecoboost version holding its value better than its diesel equivalent.

How much you pay for car insurance depends on other factors including your age and where you live. We have put together a table of estimated monthly premium costs for a Ford Mondeo depending on where you live in the UK.

Is a used Ford Mondeo reliable?

Most complaints about the Ford Mondeo are saved for the interior trim which can appear quite plastic and cheap. For vehicle reliability though, it scores well both for diesel and petrol variants.

If you are buying an older model stick with the manual gearbox as there have been reports of slipping gearboxes in automatics with higher mileage. Also, the Mondeo is a popular car for towing caravans (it has won awards), so if it has a towbar make sure you know its history.

You can buy a used 2012 Ford Mondeo for as little as £2,000 on Autotrader but a 2016 1.5 TITANIUM ECONETIC TDCI 5d 114 BHP with 50,000 mileage will set you back around £9,700 in 2024.
