The Ford Kuga was introduced in 2008 as a compact SUV for the European market that was later introduced to the US. There are currently around 270,000 Ford Kuga’s on the UK roads in three versions.
The 2nd generation facelift provided an uptick in sales and the option of choosing a petrol Ecoboost 1.5L 150PS to 2.0L 234PS (AWD) or a 2.0L Duratorq, 140-180PS diesel engine made things simple when choosing your spec. They came in the standard Ford range of ZETEC (basic), Titanium (good equipment), ST line (sporty) and Vignale (luxury).
The insurance grouping of the Ford Kuga is set by the ABI and is grouped between 12 and 22 depending on the size of the engine and power rating. Bigger engines in the ST line and Vignale will bump up the price of your insurance premium.
These prices were based on quotes obtained from quotezone with Reading being the average benchmark for insurance costs in the UK. The cost of car insurance varies around the UK based on location.
The Kuga has been around for 15 years (would you believe it) and has not really had a major styling overhaul in that time. The initial design would seem rather dated now but from around 2012 onwards the car has been more desirable both as a new and used Ford car.
They can be used as a family car with ample leg room in the rear but boot space is not as plentiful as some competitors. The Kuga is also a good towing vehicle and suitable for pulling your caravan with the option of AWD (All Wheel Drive) and trailer sway control.
That is not to say the Kuga is a good off-road vehicle as these SUV’s are not designed to be driven on rough terrain like a Landrover Defender.
You can buy a new Ford Kuga in the Titanium, ST-line and Vignale model range with three types of engine, the petrol Ecoboost and two hybrid versions, full (FHEV) and plugin (PHEV). The Kuga now has intelligent AWD which kicks in when you need it like traction control but all models are marketed as FWD with an option to change the driving mode.
The cheapest new Ford Kuga Titanium starts at around £33,380 with an 1.5L 150PS Ecoboost petrol engine with a 6 speed manual gearbox. Going up to £41,205 for the Vignale 2.5l Duratec PHEV (plugin hybrid) 225PS CVT Automatic.
The Kuga used car market is strong especially for the 2nd and 3rd generation vehicles. The Kuga has a good reliability rating compared with its competitors in the UK and the chassis has been around long enough to flag serious issues if there were to be some.
The model range was supported primarily by two engine variants, the petrol 1.5L to 2.0L Ecoboost and the diesel 2.0L Duratorq. Then the Duratorq was replaced by the Ecoblue version with better CO2 emissions. The diesel engine has now been replaced by the hybrid options and is no longer fitted.
The 3rd generation is roomier and lighter than its predecessor which has helped evolve the Kuga into a better, more equipped family car. But the competition in the SUV crossover market is intense with the Nissan Qashqai and the Mazda CX-5 providing stiff competition.
