The Ford Focus has been in production since 1998 as a replacement for the Ford Escort. But, like the Ford Fiesta in 2024, it too will be sacrificed for the introduction of electric and hybrid cars from 2025.
With over 1 million Ford Focus’ currently licensed on UK roads there are many Ford owners out there looking for cheap insurance deals. Focus insurance group classification is determined by The Association of British Insurers ABI and for the Focus you are looking at a grouping between 11 and 28 for factory made cars or up to group 40 for the RS Focus. The engine size and price and ease of repairing the vehicle are the main factors that determine your cars classification.
These prices were based on quotes obtained from quotezone with Reading being the average benchmark for insurance costs in the UK. The cost of car insurance varies around the UK based on location.
The new and used Focus market is strong. This car is seen as a reliable motor with reasonably priced spare parts, good performance and excellent handling for the money. How much you pay for car insurance depends on many factors including your age and where you live. We have put together a table of estimated monthly premium costs for a Ford Focus depending on where you live in the UK.
If you want to buy a new (4th gen) Focus you will only be able to pick the Ecoboost powertrain independently, or supporting a mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (mHEV). They are available in 125PS (insurance group 13), 145PS, 155PS for the 1.0L and 280PS for the 2.3L depending on what kind of performance you require. The ST model is a lot more expensive to insure than the Titanium, with 0-60mph a healthy 5.8 seconds placing it in insurance group 27.
The price of a new Ford Focus Titanium starts around £28,000 going up to £39,000 for an ST 2.3L. Families might choose a Focus estate car with more room for storage and that will set you back an additional £1,200.
In the used Focus market the 3rd generation model appears to be popular with motorists looking for performance, fuel economy and cheap road tax. The Ecoboost was introduced in the MK3 but they were sold alongside turbo diesel power units for those who prefer a diesel version.
The sleeker low profile styling and responsive handling of the MK3 Facelift make it an attractive used car option, with the Ecoboost version holding its value better than its diesel equivalent.
The Ecoboost is predominately reliable and Focus cars are achieving high mileage without significant reliability issues. But there were some overheating issues in older models and more recently low oil pressure issues associated with higher mileage cars. Also the 100PS version makes the focus feel a little underpowered. If that doesn’t bother you, they seem to be cheaper on the used car market .
You can buy a used Ford Focus for as little as £2,000 but a 2016 Mk3 Facelift 125PS with 50,000 mileage will set you back around £8,000.
