Why choose a local specialist to build your loft conversion or kitchen extension?

When you’re planning a significant renovation or improvement to your home, it’s important to find a local extension builder that you can rely on.

Selecting the wrong tradesman to complete your home extension could result in botched plans, delayed building work or even a loss of value to your family home. Luckily, HaMuch provides a quick and easy way to find the right person for any type of specialist extension or conversion job.

Looking for a local building contractor or refurbishment expert? You can find the right tradesman at HaMuch.

While opting for the cheapest possible contractor may seem tempting when contemplating the necessary spend for a significant home renovation like a barn conversion or conservatory fitting, consider the following things before selecting your tradesman:

  • Are they well-respected in the local area: have any local companies or tradesmen had positive or negative dealings with them?
  • Were customers happy with the quality of work completed by the tradesman? Did they complete the job on time and finish it to a high level of quality?
  • Are they well-established? Choosing a specialist who has many years’ experience will ensure that your loft conversion, conservatory build or kitchen side return is constructed on time, to budget and to an exemplary standard.

What does an extension or conversion builder do?

An extension or conversion builder oversees the entire project from start to finish. Sometimes, they partake in the construction work themselves. Builders usually have a solid understanding of other trades and this helps in their supervision of the tradesmen working with them. Some may also be experts in specific areas, such as barn conversion specialists or loft conversion builders.

Here are a few things your extension or conversion builder can do for you:

  • Planning your extension: A builder can help you plan your extension if you aren’t sure where to start. Some builders are good with blueprints, and they’ll almost certainly know one or two brilliant architects.
  • Handling legalities: Building something like an extension, loft conversion or basement conversion often requires some legal work with local authorities. Extension builders will be familiar with this process and will help you secure every necessary permit.
  • Handling administrative work: Your builder also handles administrative tasks, including paying other craftsmen for their work.

I own a large studio with separate bathroom and kitchen which I intend to turn into a one bedroom property. The studio is on the top floor of a Victorian conversion that has three other flats. I own the attic space and the communal stairwell directly outside the flat front door. I intend to; 1. Move the front door to the bottom of the stairwell, creating more space in the flat. 2. Fit a new kitchen with plumbing in the current studio area creating a kitchen diner. 3. Knock down the wall between the bathroom and the kitchen to create a bedroom. 4. create a wet-room with shower and toilet / sink in the remaining space. 5. Gas to be put into the flat and radiators to be fitted. New windows to be put in. 6. New lighting to be installed in the communal area just outside the newly placed front door with motion detectors. The current state of the property is that it is in a poor but liveable state. There is no heating via radiators as the flat is electric only but it does have the means for gas central heating to be installed via Combi Boiler. The flat will require a new waste pipe and plumbing and will also require new electrics to be put in. I have the consent from the other freeholders in the building to carry out the works. I have a detailed architectural designs drawn up.
