What do financial advisors do?

Financial advisors are experts who look at your personal finances and consider your future plans to recommend products to meet your needs. They can help you with big financial decisions, such as:

  • Buying a property

There are two types of financial advisors and it’s important to understand the difference between each one:

Independent financial advisors (IFAs): These financial advisors can offer unbiased advice about a variety of different financial situations and products from many different companies.

Restricted advisors: These advisors can only offer advice on a specific area, for example pensions, or they may only be able to advise you on products from a limited range of companies.

Regulation: IFAs give you personalised recommendations based on your circumstances, so if you end up with an unsuitable financial product or you think you were mis-sold you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Cons

Costs: As you’d expect, financial advice usually isn’t free. Financial advisor fees can range from hourly rates and fixed fees to a percentage of your total investment. It’s important to consider whether you think a financial advisor’s fee offers value for money through peace of mind and potential savings or profit from getting expert advice.

Lack of control: Some financial advisors can manage investments for you, so you don’t have to do the day-to-day running. While some people prefer to leave their investments with a trusted expert, others find it hard to cope with not knowing why their money is fluctuating.

What is the difference between a financial planner and a financial advisor?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, a financial planner and a financial advisor do have different roles. The main difference between a financial planner and a financial advisor is that a planner tends to focus on your financial goals, while an advisor focuses on your money.

A financial planner will:

  • Focus on understanding your goals and objectives for your finances

  • Help you implement a plan or strategy for your finances that can include your entire family

  • Work with your other professionals such as solicitors and accountants to work towards your goals

  • Advise you on financial products where they fit in with your goals

A financial advisor will:

  • Provide advice on financial products based on your circumstances

  • Focus on your investment returns

  • Often work with you on a short-term basis, finding you a product for a specific life event or need, such as life insurance or a pension

It’s worth remembering that there may be some overlap between the roles of a financial planner and advisor, but it’s important to be sure which type of professional you’re engaging with to ensure you get the exact service you need.

How often do you need to see a financial advisor?

It’s a good idea to see your financial advisor at least once a year if they are helping you with financial planning or managing investments for you. Usually, your financial advisor will book a meeting with you at the start of the financial year to review the previous year, ensure that your tax affairs are in order and see if you want to make any changes to your plans.

If you are speaking with a financial advisor for advice about a certain product, for example a pension or life insurance, you might not need to meet them regularly. You might decide to speak with them to get the initial product set up then manage it yourself, and only speak to them if you want to make bigger changes to your policy.

Can a financial advisor help with debt?

Generally, a financial advisor won’t help with debt. Financial advisors focus on managing wealth, so it’s best to engage a financial advisor when you have money to invest, whether it’s for stocks and shares or a pension. There are debt advisors that can help you learn how to clear your debts in a manageable way, so you can one day hopefully have enough money to invest in other ventures. How to find a financial advisor

1. Decide what financial advice you need

What do you want a financial advisor to help with? Do you have a lump sum that you want to invest, or do you want help with retirement planning? Perhaps you want someone to help you with a full financial plan and strategy.

Once you know what you need, you’ll be better positioned to find a financial advisor that specialises in cases like yours to help you make the most out of your meeting.

2. Use comparison websites

Use websites like HaMuch to find financial advisors in your area. We’ll pass your details through to our partners who can help you find advisors that are happy to meet face-to-face, online or both. Some websites ask you for the value of the assets you want advice about to offer you a more personalised service, which is well worth doing.

3. Decide whether you want an IFA or a restricted FA

If you’re looking to come up with a financial plan that will stay with you over the years or you want advice about a range of different financial products, it’s best to go with an independent financial advisor (IFA).

If you just want advice on one product, for example life insurance, you could go with a restricted financial advisor. However, it’s best to look for restricted ‘whole of market’ advisors, which means that they specialise in one financial product or service but can get you the best deal from most of the providers on the market.

4. Check the Financial Services Register

When you’ve found a few financial advisors that you like, check that they are authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on the Financial Services Register. All financial advisors need to be on this register, so don’t use one that isn’t as they might not give you the correct advice and you may struggle to get your money back if you are mis-sold a product or mis-advised.

5. Ask the advisors what qualifications they have

It’s always a good idea to ask what qualifications the advisors you’re speaking to have. The FCA requires all IFAs to have a diploma-level certificate, which includes the Diploma in Financial Planning (DipFP) or the Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning (ADFP). They also need to have a Statement of Professional Standing (SPS) which is issued by an FCA-accredited body and shows that they are on the Financial Services Register.

Bear in mind that the more qualified the financial advisor is, the more they may charge.

What to expect from a financial advisor

A good financial advisor will establish a relationship with you so you feel like partners working on your financial strategy. To be able to work this way, there are certain things you’ll need to do and other things that the FA should do to make the most of your meetings. Here’s what to expect from a financial advisor:

Questions

Your FA will ask you a lot of questions. They will all be surrounding your financial situation, what your personal circumstances are and what your financial plans for the future are (if you know!). Check that your information will be kept confidential and make sure you ask whether your details will be used for marketing purposes – you should always be able to opt out.

Make sure you ask questions too – if there is anything you don’t understand, ensure you ask the FA to clarify it so you can make informed decisions.

Education

Your financial advisor should explain what they’re doing with your investments or why they’re recommending a certain product to you in a clear, easy-to-understand way. They should teach you about what’s going on with your portfolio or why you should consider a financial product without making it go over your head. You should come away from a meeting with your financial advisor with the feeling that you’ve learnt something without it being over-complicated.

Goal setting

A good IFA that’s helping you with financial planning or wealth management should work with you to set realistic goals. You might know that you want to plan for your retirement, but you’re unsure about how much you need to save or should realistically expect to save. A financial advisor can help you come up with goals that work for you based on your projected income, inflation, taxes and your expenses.

Communication

If you’re having ongoing support from your IFA, you should expect them to communicate with you regularly. If they’re managing investments for you, you should meet at least once per year, but a good financial advisor may also get in touch with you via email or by phone at regular intervals. In your first year, they may suggest that you meet up once per quarter to ensure that your investments are on track and you’re happy with the goals you’ve set together.

Proactive advice and guidance

Rather than your financial advisor only contacting you when your investments go down, they should be proactive and keep up to date with changes in the market and regulations. If they consider that an investment you’ve made may no longer be right for you, they should offer guidance to help you decide what you want to do with that investment to protect your assets as much as possible.
