Noisy radiators keeping me awake

Jan | February 28 2018 | BN3 2FA

My radiators make a loud clucking popping sound in the morning when the central heating system first fires up, this noise lasts about 45min to an hour. It also happens at night. I don’t really notice the noise during the day (only weekends when I am home in the day). What is the cause of the loud noise in the morning and how can I stop it as it wakes me?

Pipes expand/contract during heating up and cooling down and if the pipes are rubbing against wood beams or whatever they are resting on it can make noises. If you can get access to pipes and put some lagging material between pipes and what they are touching this may reduce noise.

Sounds like you system is pulling air in and takes a while for it to settle down

If you all ready power flush your heating system, add noise reduce +inhibitor this will make it work.Regards Svetlin

May need powerflush , pipes not adequately clipped . IS the rad water when you bleed it black ? If yes the system needs a flush and inhibitor installed

You may have a faulty thermostatic valve, which can send a vibration through pipe work.

is it open vented or sealed?

It's the expansion of the pipes heating up. It will make similar noises when it's cooling down its usual caused be numbers on first fix not notching the pipe hole big enough and has no we're to expand. Plastic pipes don't do it.

Need bleeding from radiators and cylinder

There are many things that can cause this phenomenon all are mentioned above, but best bet is that if the system has not been power flushed it will be most lightly the cause of the problem. Kettling in the boiler can also cause quite a noise through out the system, this is when the pipe work becomes restricted and the flow is reduced.

Its the expansion where the pipe goes through the timber joists aren't big enough so when the pipe heats up it expands which pushes against it and causes noises or faulty TRV/dirty system.

Power flushing will only make the plumber richer and the house will still be there ,lag round pipes going over the joists, and clip pipework

Most often caused by pipes moving on expansion in notches in joists. There should be felt around the pipes in notches but this is often ignored by many installers. Can also be caused when the plastic inserts have not been fitted onto the rad brackets. But this is usually only for about 5 minutes as the rad is heating up.

Depending on how big the installation is? can noise oscillate in minutes and hours? Air in the heating system and no pipes fitting not adequately clipped

If you fit an automatic bypass it will take the shock load out of the system

Most of the things said are true but just to add it all expansion and contracting is a major problem with many systems. Radiator brackets come with little plastic spacer that fit between the rad and the bracket this should be in place to stop, expansion and contracting noises

Could be the pipe close to each other and not supported properly, sometime the trv controller could be lose or the radiator it self not supported properly on the bracket.

Powerflush is what I'd suggest and take it as a process of elimination, if that didn't work then I'd think if ripping all floors uo to lag pipes, but get it cleaned and looked at first.
