Tiling over the kitchen splashback

My splashback is rotting in places, immediately around the sink - it seems to be made of some kind of wood composite. The rest of it, above the cooker and under the cabinets, is in great condition. Somebody suggested that I put tiles over the top of the existing splashback just in the area around the sink and leave the rest as it is. Does that sound right?
