Loft conversion - do I need an architect

I want to convert my loft but not sure where the access/stairs to it could be, the space in the hallway is tight and I don’t want to eat into bedroom space. (I’m assuming no planning permission will be necessary). Do I need an architect or could a good builder help me with design solutions as well?
