The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van

The Sprinter was introduced in 1995 and soon gained international recognition as being the most powerful and technologically advanced in its class as a large light commercial van.

The Sprinter's main competitors are the Ford Transit, Nissan Navara, Fiat Ducato and the VW Crafter which is actually a re-badged Sprinter. There is a premium with having the Mercedes-Benz name so they tend to be more expensive than the competitors.

The Sprinter comes in various chassis arrangements, primarily being a 4-door van but also a 2-door pickup truck, a 4-door crew van and 4-door minibus. The diesel engine was the power unit of choice for these vans but there was also a petrol variant available as a manual or automatic. Older versions are all rear wheel drive or all wheel drive but the 3rd generation has a front wheel drive variant.

The Euro 6 version of diesel engines called BlueTech, that pass stricter emissions control for EU countries including London were fitted to the 2nd generation vans in 2015.

A new Sprinter in its 3rd generation format built from 2019 and will cost from around £45,000. There are three engine options including Petrol and Diesel Turbos and the new e-Sprinter that is fully electric with various power options depending on the range and power you require.

A used Sprinter can be picked up for as little as £10,000 with some hefty mileage but expect to pay around £15,000 for a 2018 plate Sprinter that is Euro 6 compliant with 100,000 miles on the clock.
